the cottage at winje's farm
What
A queen bed, two small sleeper couches (full, or a little smaller) and a crib on request. Accommodation is an open plan space and offers the possibility of many permutations to accommodate the shape of your family.
How
This is a self-catering B&B. The ingredients of a generous full farm breakfast is provided, for you to cook whenever it suits you – even for dinner, if that’s your choice.
Fresh organic vegetables from our garden, yours for the picking, every day in season.
Welcome
We are happy to welcome hunters, historians, honeymooners, families with small children, retired folks, cyclists, bikers, birders, bookworms, writers, readers, anyone, in fact, with a need for somewhere quiet and beautiful to recharge their batteries.
My Text
IMAGINE a place with no traffic lights, no sirens, no traffic jams (unless you count the odd cattle drive) no pollution, no neon.
CROWDED with Sandhill Cranes, run over by ground squirrels, surrounded by herds of deer, woken by the sun and burbled to sleep by a busy mountain stream.
THE FISHING is good and the hiking even better. Read a fat book under a shady tree or hike your socks off. Whatever you need from a country getaway, youll find it in Surprise Valley.
The Cottage is a lovingly restored 1865 pioneer cabin with all the creature comforts to make your stay memorable and relaxing.
Warm antique finishes and a fully-equipped kitchen with microwave, electric stove, coffee machine, etc.
A wood bathroom with a stunning shower built from antique board. Private everything, deck, parking, entrance, bathroom.....your own retreat.
No noise or light pollution. Very little traffic. No telephone.
Sleep
Sleep with the sounds of the nearby creek in your ears, or the rush of wind in the wonderful old trees around the homestead. You can hear the owls, or the far-off yip of coyotes in the desert night.
Relax
Simple comfort in your own space. Furnishing are specifically chosen
for maximum comfort, minimum fuss.
Refresh
The wood bathroom is exquisite, the shower built from antique board.

"Continuing its work with landowners in one of California's most ecologically important regions, Audubon California recently helped place a second conservation easement on a ranch in Surprise Valley - located in the extreme northeastern corner of California.
The Winje Ranch rests along Upper Alkali Lake and contains important wet meadows, grassland and riparian habitats that support a variety of bird species, including nesting Sandhill Crane, Long-billed Curlew, Wilson's Phalarope, Wilson's Snipe, American Avocets and dabbling ducks such as Gadwall, Mallard and teal."
"Russell and Jan Winje have an inspiring love of the land and the wildlife it supports, and we're pleased that this passion prompted them to work with us to protect it well into the future".
